About the Role
The Interstellar Research Group (IRG) is seeking a volunteer Social Media Subcommittee Lead to help guide our growing social media team and expand IRG's digital presence.
This is an opportunity for someone interested in social media, creative communication, organization, and leadership to gain hands-on experience while helping share interstellar research and exploration with a broader audience.
What You'll Do
- Coordinate and support Social Media Subcommittee volunteers.
- Develop and maintain a sustainable content strategy and posting schedule.
- Coordinate social media coverage of IRG events, programs, announcements, scholarships, publications, and other initiatives.
- Delegate content creation, platform management, and scheduling according to volunteers' interests and strengths.
- Review content and help ensure public-facing communications are accurate and appropriate.
- Coordinate with the Publicity Committee, Email Marketing team, and other IRG volunteers.
- Monitor social media performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Maintain basic documentation and prepare a brief monthly report for the Publicity Committee.
The subcommittee is currently growing. As additional volunteers are recruited, the Lead will delegate platform management, scheduling, and content creation to the appropriate team members. During the transition, the Lead may need to temporarily assist with these hands-on tasks as needed.
Who We're Looking For
You do not need to be a social media expert to apply. We're looking for someone who:
- Enjoys social media, digital communication, or creative projects.
- Is organized and comfortable coordinating projects and people.
- Communicates clearly and works well with volunteers.
- Is willing to learn new tools and platforms.
- Has good judgment when representing an organization publicly.
- Is interested in space, science, interstellar exploration, or science communication.
Previous professional experience in social media, marketing, communications, or leadership is helpful but not required.
Time Commitment
This is a volunteer position, and the time commitment will vary with IRG's activities and the size of the team. The goal is to develop a sustainable workflow that distributes responsibilities rather than requiring the Lead to do everything personally.
What You'll Gain
- Hands-on leadership and project-management experience.
- Experience coordinating a creative volunteer team.
- Practical experience in social media strategy and digital communications.
- The opportunity to help shape IRG's growing social media program.
- A transition and orientation period with the current Lead, including access to existing documentation and workflows.
