Incumbents attend police academy and are under the direct supervision of a field training officer. This classification is safety-sensitive, subject to random drug testing per County's Drug & Alcohol Policy.Essential FunctionsAttend training sessions to gain skills and knowledge regarding department operations, job performance, policies, procedures, codes, and criminal/civil case law; read professional literature; complete tests and skills assessments; and maintain professional affiliations.Enforce all applicable codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations (both traffic and criminal) to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.Detect and deter criminal activity; patrol designated areas; respond to calls relayed by dispatchers; write citations; apprehend, arrest and process criminals, fugitives, and offenders as appropriate; provide assistance and backup support to other officers and agencies as necessary.Conduct preliminary investigations; interview victims, complainants and witnesses and take statements; gather information and evidence; secure crime scenes; prepare investigative reports and sketches; participate in court activities; and testify in judicial proceedings.Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters, including lifting, dragging, or carrying people away from dangerous situations, securing/evacuating people from particular areas, administering medical aid, or extinguishing small fires.Perform other duties including monitoring and responding to calls for assistance, investigating accidents and reported crimes, interviewing citizens, conducting searches, pursuing fleeing and subduing resisting suspects, effecting arrests, and processing and transporting prisoners.Follow safety procedures, utilize safety equipment, and monitor work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; perform driving functions safely and efficiently under various conditions, including day/night hours, congested traffic, adverse weather, and emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits; inspect and maintain assigned police vehicle, uniform, weapons, and equipment.Create/maintain positive public relations with the general public; provide education and information to the public on laws, crime prevention, drug abuse, and related issues.Communicate via telephone and/or two-way radio; effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.Attend shift meetings, training sessions and seminars as required to remain knowledgeable of departmental operations, promote improved job performance, and stay current with changing policies, procedures, codes, and criminal/civil case law; read professional literature; maintain professional affiliations.Operate or use various equipment associated with law enforcement to complete work assignments; operate and maintain police vehicle, firearms, electronic control device, emergency equipment, radio/communications equipment, and other law enforcement tools.Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED required; must be a U.S. citizen and at least 20 years of age; previous work experience preferred.Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.BackgroundBackgrounds are checked through Georgia Crime Information Center and National Crime Information Center. Previous tickets, misdemeanors or convictions evaluated individually; they do not necessarily disqualify applicants. Extensive background examination includes personal and employment reference checks, inquiries into personal behavior, review of past drug/alcohol abuse, military record if applicable. A physical, drug screen, polygraph, and psychological exam are required. POST certification guidelines specify disqualifying convictions include theft, controlled substance violations, sexual offenses, or three or more misdemeanors in immediate past five years.TrainingAll persons hired as sworn Police are placed in a training academy and have an on-the-job field training program. Academies are physically and mentally demanding; multiple written exams with failure thresholds lead to termination. Must pass pre-employment agility test to gain entrance and post-academy agility test to graduate.Shift WorkDeKalb Police Officers work rotating shifts and days off; may be assigned any precinct within DeKalb County.DutiesPersonnel perform a variety of tasks beyond law enforcement and responding to fires, including rendering first aid at emergency scenes and responding to automobile accidents or other emergencies where life and property are in jeopardy or hazardous chemicals present.EnvironmentWork outdoors in all kinds of weather, hot and humid, indoors or outdoors; patrol shifts in squad car alone.#J-18808-Ljbffr
