Description
TheForeignLanguageMedicalInterpreterprovidesaccurateconsecutiveand/orsimultaneousinterpretationforLimitedEnglishProficient (LEP)patientsandtheirfamilies,ensuringcompleteandculturallyappropriatecommunicationthroughoutthecontinuumofcare.
Servingasbothalanguagespecialistandculturalliaison,theinterpreterpromotesunderstandingbetweenpatientsandhealthcareproviders,supportsequitablecaredelivery,andensuresadherencetoregulatoryrequirementsandprofessionalstandards.Thispositionalsoparticipatesindepartmentaleducation,documentation,andperformanceimprovementinitiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Language Interpretation
Provideaccurateinterpretationduringmedicalencountersusingconsecutive,simultaneous,andsighttranslationtechniques.
Deliverinterpretationservicesviain-person,telephone,orvideoremoteinterpretationplatformswhenneeded.
Supportcommunicationinavarietyofclinicalenvironmentsincludingsurgery,trauma,mentalhealth,palliativecare,anddischargeplanning.
Cultural Mediation
Documentation & Compliance
Maintainaccuraterecordsofinterpretationencountersincludingencountertype,duration,andservicelocation.
EnsurestrictadherencetoHIPAAregulations,theNationalCodeofEthicsforInterpretersinHealthCare,andEmoryHealthcarepolicies.
Professional Development & Mentorship
Participateincontinuingeducation,competencyvalidation,anddepartmentalqualityimprovementinitiatives.
Mentornewlyhiredinterpretersandparticipateinpeerreviewprocesses.
Provideeducationandtrainingtostaffregardinglanguageaccesscomplianceandinterpreterserviceprotocols.
Operational Support
Assistwithinterpreterschedulinganddispatchactivitiesduringlow-volumeperiods.
Supportthedeployment,maintenance,andtroubleshootingofinterpretationequipmentincludingphones,tablets,andvideoremoteinterpretation (VRI)units.
Patient & Family Support
Providepatientandfamilysupportbyfacilitatingcommunicationandnavigationofcareservices.
Connectpatientsandfamilieswithhospitalorcommunityresourcesasappropriate.
Participateinon-callorafter-hourscoverageasrequired.
Travel
- TravelmayberequiredbetweenEmoryHealthcareoperatingunitsoraffiliatedlocations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
HighSchoolDiplomaorequivalentrequired.
Experience
Two (2)yearsofexperienceinhealthcare,medicalinterpretation,customerservice,advocacy,orarelatedfield.
Atleastone (1)yearofexperienceinmedicalinterpretation.
Certification
Completionofa 40- 60 hour Medical Interpreter Training Program suchas:
BridgingtheGap
ALTA
LanguageLineAcademy
Orequivalentprogram
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities ( Required)
DemonstratedproficiencyinEnglishandthetargetlanguage (reading,writing,andspeaking).
Strongknowledgeofmedicalterminologyinbothlanguages.
Interpreterproficiencyvalidatedthrougha third- party Interpreter Skills Test ( IST) .
Abilitytocommunicateclearlyandprofessionallyincomplexhealthcareenvironments.
Preferred Qualifications
Education

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium Max 25lbs): up to 25 lbs., 0-33% of the work day (occasionally) Lifting 25 lbs. max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs.; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

Environmental exposures include but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure, Bio-hazardous waste chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, Communicable diseases, Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required.
