Perform US state/local income and franchise compliance for the consolidated group. Provide support for tax audits, special projects, tax risk analysis, forecasts, other financial reporting requirements and federal tax compliance.
- Prepare and review (as needed) state and local income tax and franchise tax returns for the consolidated US tax group and support the state and local tax process overall. Ensure accurate and timely submission of returns and compliance with tax laws/regulations and internal control processes. Perform complex tax analysis and research as needed. Communicate and interact closely with management, internal departments, external consultants, and other Mercedes tax departments to gather information, address issues, and collaborate on tax topics. (45%)
- Assist in all aspects of state and local income tax and franchise tax audits and dispute resolution to ensure compliance with applicable tax laws/regulations and internal control processes. Ensure audit inquiries are thoroughly researched and responses to external auditors' inquiries are clear, cogent, and timely. Respond to or review notices/miscellaneous correspondence from state tax authorities (35%)
- Prepare and assist management with state tax financial reporting requirements including preparation or review of detailed tax forecasts, operative planning, risk analysis, and cash planning/payments. Compute and analyze state tax contingencies and prepare the quarterly state tax contingency reserve whitepaper. Ensure tax results and risks are complete and accurately forecasted and valued in accordance with IFRS and internal control processes. Communicate information to Accounting and external auditors. (10%)
- Perform federal tax compliance including preparation and review of federal tax returns for the US consolidated group. Assist with international income tax compliance required for US tax filings. Ensure accurate and timely submission of federal returns and supporting analysis in accordance with applicable tax laws/regulations and internal control processes. (5%)
- Assist management with special projects and conduct ad-hoc tax research as required or requested to optimize overall tax position and reduce tax risks involved with these projects and strategies. Monitor tax legislation and impact to Mercedes. (5%)
Education: Bachelor's Degree (accredited school) with emphasis in Accounting, Finance or Law. Master of Science in Taxation or LLM in Tax preferred. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license required.
Experience: Must have 5+ years (total) of experience with a Big 4 or regional accounting firm and/or corporate tax department. Must have knowledge of US tax law and tax compliance processes, must possess analytical and computer/technology skills for tax research and must have the ability to evaluate financial statement data, the ability to collect data, establish facts, identify trends and must have knowledge of accounting transactions and internal controls.
Other Skills: Strong analytical skills and organization skills. Proficiency in PC skills and Microsoft Office applications. Corptax knowledge a plus. Effective presentation and communication skills. Demonstrated problem-solving abilities. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
