Job Description Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) - First Assist Position Overview The First Assist provides intraoperative tissue handling, exposure, and assistance directly to the surgeon for a range of surgical cases. The role works within sterile and safety guidelines to support optimal operative outcomes.
The position collaborates with the surgeon, scrub techs, and circulating staff to ensure precise technique and efficient case flow.
Responsibilities - Provide direct intraoperative assistance during procedures
- Assist with exposure, hemostasis, and tissue handling under anatomic guidance
- Maintain sterile technique and assist with instrument management
- Coordinate with the surgical team to anticipate instrument and supply needs
- Document intraoperative actions and patient status as required
- Assist with room setup and turnover to prepare for subsequent cases
- Support patient safety and adherence to regulatory standards
QualificationsEducation: Accredited surgical technology program completion
Licensure: Certification as CST required
Certifications:- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
- CPR and BLS
Experience or Skills: Experience as a surgical tech with intraoperative assisting; strong teamwork and manual dexterity
Experience - Assisting in OR with multiple surgical specialties
- Experience maintaining sterile fields and passing instruments
Preferred - Experience in cardiovascular surgery
Work Environment Operative room setting with high acuity cases; close collaboration with surgeons and anesthesia team
Long cases and variable scheduling may occur depending on case load
