Position SummaryThis position is responsible for providing strategic legal support and direction for the company on complex construction and infrastructure matters, with a primary focus on construction, engineering, procurement, project development, and related commercial agreements. The role includes advising business clients throughout the project lifecycle—from project structuring and solicitation through contract negotiation, administration, change management, claims strategy, and closeout—while helping the company allocate risk appropriately and achieve practical business outcomes. This position also collaborates closely with outside counsel and employees at all levels of the company to provide timely, business-oriented legal guidance in a fast-paced, regulated environment.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesServe as lead legal advisor to business partners on construction and project development matters, providing practical, risk-informed counsel on project strategy, contract structure, and commercial execution.Advise business partners throughout the sourcing and procurement process for major construction projects, including development of solicitation documents, evaluation criteria, bidder communications, and negotiation strategy.Lead the drafting, negotiation, interpretation, and lifecycle legal support for construction-related agreements, including EPC, design-build, engineer/procure/construct, professional services, procurement, equipment supply, and other project contracts.Advise on key construction risk issues, including scope development, schedule and delay exposure, change orders, performance security, warranties, indemnity, limitation of liability, insurance, and dispute escalation provisions.Support project teams during contract administration and execution by counseling on claims, notices, contract interpretation, amendments, change management, and issue resolution.Partner closely with multiple stakeholders across the organization, including project development, engineering, supply chain, operations, and finance teams, to align legal strategy with business objectives and project delivery needs.Direct and manage outside counsel on specialized construction matters, disputes, and claims to ensure high-quality, cost-effective support.Help manage outside counsel spend and legal support resources for major projects, including invoice review and adherence to department guidelines.Develop and maintain construction contracting standards, playbooks, fallback positions, and training materials to improve consistency, speed, and risk management across the company's project portfolio.QualificationsRequiredJ.D. from an American Bar Association–accredited law school with strong academic credentials.6+ years of relevant legal experience, including substantial experience in construction law, major project contracting, or complex commercial transactions; 10+ years of experience is strongly preferred.Licensed to practice law in one or more U.S states.Experience advising on the interplay between business, legal, and regulatory considerations in connection with construction, infrastructure, procurement, or other major capital projects.Strong experience drafting and negotiating complex construction-related agreements, such as EPC, design-build, procurement, equipment supply, professional services, and other project delivery contracts.Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects with competing deadlines.Strong focus on inclusion, innovative thinking, practical solutions, and providing excellent customer service.PreferredKnowledge of laws, regulations, and industry practices relevant to utility construction, major capital projects, procurement, and project execution.Experience as in-house counsel.High ethical standards and behaviors.Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.Proficient in engaging with upper management across business units and providing training to business partners.Substantial experience drafting and negotiating sophisticated construction and commercial contracts, including agreements involving risk allocation, schedule, performance, and claims issues.LocationThis is a hybrid position, with four days/week in the office in downtown Atlanta, though working hours can be flexible to accommodate reasonable, personal obligations.
