The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General. The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units and an operations division. The position filled through this announcement will serve in the Tax Services section of our Commercial Transactions and Litigation Division. Job Summary Attorneys in this section represent the Georgia Dept. of Revenue and advise on the proper interpretation of tax (sales, income, and property), vehicle title, alcohol, and tobacco statutes, handle litigation in those areas; and handle appeals before State and Federal court.Primary Duties & Responsibilities Litigate cases: participate in hearings and appear in state and federal courts to try cases, argue motions and appeals, research and prepare pleadings, motions, briefs; attend depositions, interview witnesses, hire expert witnesses; participate in settlement negotiations and prepare pleadings and discovery responses.Provide legal advice and/or representation to clients/agencies, draft memoranda of advice.Research pertinent legal issues and keep abreast of recent legal developments.Draft formal opinions in response to legal questions.Attend client, board, departmental, and division meetings as required.Attend continuing legal education seminars and make presentations at the same time.Travel as required by the position.Perform other related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited law school and membership in the Georgia Bar in good standing.Preferred Qualifications Some tax experience preferred but not required.Litigation experience preferred.Additional Information Selected candidates are subject to a State of Georgia tax records check and a criminal background investigation.The State of Georgia is an equal opportunity employer.
