OverviewDescription1898 & Co., a division of Burns & McDonnell, is seeking experienced Transmission Planning Consultants to support our nationwide consulting practice. We are hiring across multiple experience levels for technically driven professionals who are passionate about power system analysis, grid reliability, and helping clients navigate the evolving energy landscape.Transmission Planning Consultants serve as trusted technical advisors, applying advanced engineering and analytical expertise to evaluate grid performance and develop solutions addressing generation retirements, renewable integration, congestion management, and regulatory compliance. This role offers the opportunity to deepen technical specialization while working with project managers, clients, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver data-driven consulting solutions.What You\'ll DoPerform a wide range of transmission planning and operational studies, including power flow, transient stability, transfer capability, short-circuit, voltage and reactive analysis, harmonics, EMT studies, reliability assessments, and production cost modeling.Execute transmission planning studies independently using industry-standard tools such as PSS&E, PSLF, PSCAD, EMTP/ATP, SKM, ETAP, and PROMOD.Evaluate compliance with NERC, FERC, and regional (RTO/ISO) requirements, including TPL standards and generator interconnection processes.Apply engineering, economic, and financial analysis to assess system performance, risks, and life-cycle costs.Develop clear, concise technical reports and client-facing presentations summarizing study results and recommendations.Develop client presentations, engineering reviews, financial analysis, and contract administration for the design/planning of utility systems.Conduct technical and business-related risk assessments that evaluate impacts of regulatory rules.Perform independent evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard engineering techniques for electric transmission planning procedures and criteria.Conduct data analysis and interpretation of engineering, financial, and economic conditions and results, and subsequent technical business implications for client projects.Analyze life-cycle costs by developing and incorporating technical assumptions regarding capital costs, O&M costs, performance estimates, and economic forecasts.Support project managers with technical execution, client deliverables, and proposal development.Collaborate across internal practices and support other business lines as needed.Mentor junior staff and contribute to continuous improvement of technical methodologies.Support business lines as required by clients.Performs other duties as assigned and Complies with all policies and standards.Ideal BackgroundProven experience in transmission planning, power system analysis, or electric utility consulting.Strong technical aptitude and interest in advancing as a subject matter expert.Experience working with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, or consulting organizations.Excellent analytical and communication skills.QualificationsBachelor Degree in Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program or related degree and 3 years of related experience required OR Master Degree in Engineering or Business and 2 years of experience required OR PhD in Engineering and 1 year of experience required.Prior experience with electric utility operations, planning, or consulting.Experience with power system planning and operations; transient stability, short circuit, and voltage analysis; NERC, FERC, and Regional requirements, policies and procedures; production costing; risk assessment techniques; TPL compliance; generator interconnection; or harmonics analysis.Experience with electric transmission systems and transmission system planning processes.Strong computer skills using industry software such as PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, and PROMOD.Ability to execute various transmission system planning studies.Knowledge of multiple power regions and independent system operators (PJM, MISO, NEISO, SPP, CAISO, WECC, SERC, ERCOT, NYISO).Knowledge of NERC and FERC standards.Ability to provide evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard engineering techniques for electric transmission system planning procedures and criteria.Knowledge of standard engineering, construction, and operation techniques for power transmission facilities.Strong attention to detail, facilitation, teamwork, organization and problem-solving skills.Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to lead, educate, and train a team of consultants in transmission planning studies.Ability to independently solve difficult problems requiring adaptation of standard techniques.Excellent written and oral communications skills and critical thinking.Ability to perform under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and work on-site as required.Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and identify critical path items.Capability to focus on big picture while addressing details essential to project outcomes.Willingness to learn new service offerings as client needs evolve.Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT).Ability to travel.Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.Compensation$110,000.00-400,000.00 YearlyThe expected compensation range is displayed in compliance with local/state regulations and factors such as education, qualifications, experience, and location.
